SHELBY ROOKE
Shelby was born to a family of tennis players, and so, of course, at the ripe age of 4, she was already swinging a racket. Her first coach would lovingly call her “shuffling Shelby!” Her family moved from Delaware to Georgia when she was about 7 years old, and they all quickly fell in love with playing ALTA on their local neighborhood teams. Soon she began traveling the country to compete in USTA junior tournaments, ascending the ranks at the state, southern, and national levels in singles and doubles. Her fireplace mantel was full of trophies — too many to count! Her impressive kick serve and sportsmanship are what CEO Amy Pazahanick remembers best from their matches together as kids.
After playing for the Walton High School Raiders from 1999-2003, she went on to receive a tennis scholarship to play for the Davidson College Wildcats in North Carolina, where she studied philosophy and Spanish. Her other career highlights include: Competing in the USTA Zone Team Championships (Zonals) 12 & under in Indianapolis. Winning 3 consecutive Georgia State Junior Closed Tennis Championships G16s and G18s at her favorite tournament in Augusta, GA. Reaching a career-high #2 ranking in the Georgia 18 & under division, which put her as the #2 seed that year at the Georgia State Junior Qualifiers Tournament in Macon, GA. And finally, helping her high school tennis team become State Champions.
She began coaching after college at the very same academies that once taught her to play the game. She mentored with dedicated professionals, developing her coaching style to fit players of all ages and skill levels. She took the Assistant Tennis Professional position at Indian Hills Country Club in 2011, where she founded the Cardio Tennis Program. She was well-known for her motivating personality, high-energy coaching style, and strategic, creative drills. She has a knack for improving a player’s overall game and technique in both private and group lessons. Her favorite shot in her arsenal is a close tie between the slice backhand and the serve-andvolley. She thinks of herself as a “net monster” and loves to encourage her players to control and dominate the short-court. In her free time she enjoys hiking, camping, and adventuring with her girlfriend and their four dogs Sunny, Otis, Scarlett, and Lucky.
